So yesterday I started my diet. MFT basically said I have taken it as far as I can at the gym - like I will keep getting stronger and tighter - but to get significantly smaller I need to change my diet. He said working out is only about 40% of it - food is like 60%. Sigh.
So my diet isn’t anything crazy - I eat relatively healthy most of the time. Not eating sauce saves a ton of calories within it self - and that isn’t for healthy that is a texture thing.
So yesterday I had cereal for breakfast, some dried mango’s for a snack, a salad with grilled chicken and no crouton’s for lunch with a little mini whole wheat pita, then later an apple for a snack, and for dinner I made baked chicken with no oil or butter - just a spice rub - steamed broccoli, and corn on the cob no butter, just a little salt for flavor. For dessert - my weakness - I had a fat free 80 calorie packet of hot chocolate. Totally satisfied my craving, but didn’t go overboard.
Hopefully I can stick to this - tonight is day 2. Watching the Biggest Loser should inspire me to stick with it!
America, You’ve Got a Drinking Problem (via apsies) (via lizlemon)(via roadrunnersoup)
This really hit home to me. Let me explain why - the reason this is so scary to me is because I don’t think people know this, which is common sense.
Let me give you an example: I have a friend here in NY that wanted to start a diet, so she gets a salad - with FRIED CHICKEN in it, then is like wondering why after weeks of salads with cheddar cheese, ranch dressing and this fried chicken she isn’t looking weight when I quote “she is eating salads every day” Opt for the grilled chicken!! No ranch - use fresh squeezed lemon, or like a bit of olive oil and vinegar, and minimize the cheese.
Example #2 - another friend would talk about how she was eating healthy with a healthy sandwich for lunch - but have tons of mayo on it. Not healthy.
Don’t get me wrong, I eat like crap ALL the time. My middle name might as well be Parmaseanbacon. But - at least I am AWARE of what I am putting in my body! This is why I work out as much as I do - because I happen to have a major sweet-tooth, and a snack cracker-tooth as well. So if I didn’t I would be 300lbs. But again, I know this, and I am AWARE of it. Which seems to be the underlying message here.
I cannot stress enough to read labels and buy organic foods. Then if you make a decision to reach for that extra dollop of whatever, you are aware of it, and can run that extra mile.

MFT had it out for me as this is the last time we are training for a few weeks since he is traveling and so am I…..
I don’t remember everything he had me do - but one thing he had me do was the scorpion (death) on the TRX. Here is a link to a video of what this is. This guy has perfect form. I can’t really even do the push up part, just getting your leg right is crazy hard. Anyway, I felt like my abs were going to (literally) rib in half.
Check it out…

New Yorkers are hard.
New Yorkers are tough.
New Yorkers are strong.
New Yorkers run 4 miles outside in the pouring rain BEFORE work on a FRIDAY.
I am a New Yorker.
It was my first time back training in a while with my travels and MFT’s travels…but I was able to hop out of bed relatively easy today
MFT decided to forgo any warm up since he knows I walk about a mile to get to the gym, that counted as my warm up today.
ACT I - 45 seconds of each x3 sets
Holding the yellow kettles do basically Balancing Stick pose from Bikram, but hold a yellow kettle in each hand, and bring them all the way to the ground. Then switch legs. You feel it in your bootie and your abs. Back and forth.
Davey’s Test - this is where you are in plank position on your hands (instead of your forearms) and you literally tap one hand to the other - without moving your hips. It didn’t seem that hard, till MFT held my hips in place, then all the sudden abs, shoulders, arms, everything started burning. It goes to show how important form is.
V-ups
ACT II - Tabata 12 minutes Tabata is a set of 20 seconds on 10 seconds of rest, continuing for 12 minutes straight with no breaks besides those 10 seconds of rest.
double hand swings using the red kettle. It’s been so long since I swung the bells this felt so heavy!
cleans with the yellow kettles
body builders
ACT III - TRX 45 seconds of each x3 sets
Alligators - lean back with your feet towards the TRX, and your arms extended, like you were going to do a push up but you are facing up instead of down. Pull yourself up and bring your left arm up next to your head and your right all the way down, then repeat on the other side, back and forth.
Pistols
Muscle Pull Throughs - I think that is what they were called? Anyway, you basically are almost laying down - like the first alligator position, but feet closer to the base so it is harder, you then pull yourself up like a row, but keep going pushing through all the way with your tri’s until you are standing. Proceed to cuss out the TRX, MFT, the gym in general, etc.
We only worked out about 45-50 minutes today because MFT just got back from a week of volunteering at an orphanage in Nairobi Africa for over a week. I wanted to look at all of his photos. His photos were beyond amazing, these were the cutest kids EVER. I felt so bad for them, there is no running water where they live. Once a week a water truck drives through and they have to buy water for bathing, cooking, drinking, everything. Even then everyone is allotted only 1 pitcher of water for bathing. So you have to basically use it for a sponge bath - if it is even enough for that. They sleep in twin beds, about three to a bed. The photos broke my heart, especially because in all of them, the kids are smiling and having a great time despite their conditions. The photos were amazing, and it really makes you appreciate what you have and where you are here in America. He is a wonderful person volunteering his time, and it just reminded me that I should do more volunteer work right here at home. What an amazing experience for MFT. I was proud of him for being so selfless.
So this morning I dragged myself out of bed and ran 4 miles outside. Let me just say - I HATE running outside. I know what you are all thinking….how can you love running inside? I love knowing that there is no wind, there is air conditioning, and most of all I don’t have to pace myself, the treadmill does it for me.
Besides the elements (wind, hills, etc) I wonder what the ratio if there is one to running outside vs. inside is. For example does 5 miles on a treadmill = 4 miles outside? Is there a way to calc this?
I googled this and found basically a bunch of websites of people asking the same thing, but no actual responses. Does anyone know - the basic calc if there is one to running outside vs inside?
Today Mailguy and I went to spin. It’s been SO LONG since I went to my favorite Monday 12:30 spin class! I was so sweaty, it was absurd. I had it dripping down my face faster than I could wipe it off. With every “push/pull” on the bike, all I could think about was the leftover pizza in my fridge…I think I pushed hard enough to throughly enjoy a few slices tonight! YUM!
I wasn’t going to post about Tuesday Paralysis because I was so disappointed in today. But - I guess you have to take the good with the bad, and learn to pick yourself up I suppose.
So I texted MFT last night to see if we could have a TRX class for training today since we haven’t had one in a long time (and I am sort of tired of kettles so I thought this would be a good alternative) luckily he thought this was a great idea. So we did two sets of the following - 45 seconds per exercise (not in this order but this is what I remember total for this morning).
muscle ups chest press pistols with a hop on the way up planks - front planks - side (both sides, 45 seconds a side) hamstring curls bridges stupid lame body builders (guess how I really feel about them?!) mountain climbers alligators low and high rows pull throughs
There were more, but I am not remembering them all.
Anyway, I was sweaty and happy and felt like I had a great workout. We stretched then I signed my paper then I saw the body fat machine and decided to check on my progress.
I work out more than like 90% of people I know. I don’t eat that well, but I am not eating like cake every night either. And what happened?! My stupid body fat is UP 0.5%! I know it is only 1/2 of 1%, but I am still so upset.
I just am tired of the battle sometimes.
Sigh.
For my birthday (Sunday!) my brother and his wife gave me a Lululemon gift card because they know I am obsessed. I went there last night and spent the gift card - plus extra. I got so much awesome stuff!
I got this shape jacket but in black, the wunder under pants (the best pants in the world, they make your butt look AMAZING and they are great as leggings too!) the ta-ta tamer sports bra in blue (soooo supportive for running, it’s AWESOME) and 2 headbands!
I seriously feel about this store the way Audrey Hepburn felt about Tiffany’s - like nothing bad will ever happen there, it’s always clean and beautiful and you want everything in side!
If you have never worn Lulu clothes to work out in - I highly recommend them, they are amazing, last forever, and the store even offers free alterations!
So - our car is dead. Dead as in, costs more to get fixed than it is worth. Which blows. Now not such a big deal for me (I don’t drive - traumatizing accident and near death experience in the past even though I have a license) but since B golf’s every weekend - it’s like this huge issue. So we might have to get a new car - which means cutting back other places like on training. GRRRR. So - hopefully I can push myself, not gain any weight, and start training again when we figure out what to do about this situation.
Anyway - Monday - my favorite spin class. Mailguy’s knee is finally totally healed, he was able to do positions 2 and 3 for the first time in FOREVER! Yay spin!
Tuesday - Ran outside. Me against the Manhattan streets. What I found is about 20 blocks from my house or so there is a grocery store that smells like Fresh products when I run by - so weird. You know that distinctive Fresh scent, that is like sugar vanilla lemon? Anyone know what I mean? Bizzare.
Wed - the stair treadmill for 32 minutes, then the sex machines thigh abductor machines. Would have done more but got into a discussion on how to make the perfect 300 costume with one of the meatheads at the gym which distracted me until I realized I needed to hop in the shower and get back to work.
Tomorrow - hopefully wake up early and get some distance in - around 5 miles or so . I have only been running 3.5 - 4 lately and I hate it. I need the calorie burn of at least 5. So we will see how early I can get up. I also have a TRX with an over the door attachment here at home, so this might come into play.
Hope you are all being healthy!
I couldn’t sleep last night - so it was hard to wake up this morning. I did - but later than I wanted to. I ran 4.08 miles (target was 5) in 40 min and 41 seconds. The reason I think this is good is because I got stopped at like 10 red lights so had I stopped my timer, I think it would have been around 35 munites, which is super fast for me.
Anyway, happy Thursday! Almost the weekend! AND ALMOST MY BIRTHDAY - WOOOOOOO!!!!
And ran 4.5ish miles in a little less than 45 minutes. I am gradually getting faster which ROCKS! YAY!
There is something so great about starting your day with a strong workout. You get it over with, it makes you feel energized, and nothing will ever wake you up as much!
Love it! Happy Thursday!
For my birthday my SIL gave me a pedometer. This is one of the greatest gifts I have ever gotten. I LOVE knowing how much I am actually walking.
Today, including my slightly over 4.5 miles on the treadmill today, I walked a total of 8.27 miles as of right now.
I love it! There are so many times I think I walked a ton and it was probably a mile, or I thought it wasn’t that much and it was like 3 miles.
I really recommend everyone getting one. It will help you keep track of how much you are actually moving, how many calories you are burning while walking to work, or around your office, or just running around town. It’s really helping me motivate to move more.
I set a minimum of walking at least 5 miles a day every day - gym day or not.
Get one and start moving!
After college, I find that it is sort of hard to make girlfriends. I have heard from lots of people that feel the same way.
An awesome way to meet people is at the gym! When I started going to the gym at the same time every day - I eventually met a bunch of girls that went to the gym at the same time as well.
Last night we all hung out for the first time and went to happy hour after work - it was so fun! It was great to hang out with and get to know a new bunch of awesome girls!
I was going to go to spin today but due to the toffee episode last night, I wanted to work out first thing this morning…
Ran 5.25 miles in 50 minutes - which for me is great! I am starting to average less than a 10 minute mile which was my marker before.
*GYM RANT FOR TODAY*
What drives me nuts is at the gym this morning there were two girls on the ellipticals next to me just like barely moving. If you are going to wake up early enough to haul yourself to the gym at 6am on a Monday, why don’t you actually work out? I am not saying you have to like kill yourself every day - but these girls weren’t like moving. Barely. Like almost they were in slow motion. For 40 minutes. Without any sweat. At all.
You know who they are - those girls or guys that are always at the gym but never sweaty or doing anything. I just don’t get it. They are always at every gym and I will never understand it.
I don’t understand the point of going if you are going to exert 0 energy. To each his own I suppose, but then they probably wonder why they never see results.
I also have no idea why this annoys me so much. Maybe because it is Monday.
